Commitment to Diversity

Northampton is a diverse college of learners and teachers. We are proud to be a leader among community colleges in recognizing the richness and value of all of the varying cultures of our academic community.

Position Statement on Diversity
We encourage and support equity in our educational programs, policies, campus life, employment, extracurricular activities and community involvement.

In our efforts to value diverse voices and perspectives, we strive to:

  • Provide equal opportunity and equal access to education.
  • Recruit and retain a diverse student body, faculty and staff.
  • Promote a campus climate where respect for and appreciation of differences are priorities, and where individuals co-exist without prejudice or bigotry.
  • Integrate multicultural perspectives throughout the curricula.
  • Analyze the diverse needs of our constituents and ensure that our services, organizational structures and institutional priorities address them.

The college embodies this vision through the actions of a variety of groups and initiatives on campus, including:

The Diversity Task Force
The Diversity Task Force is a dedicated group of faculty and staff who work to create and maintain a comfortable and safe campus environment for everyone, regardless of race, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation. The Task Force strives to recruit and retain a diverse student body, staff and faculty and to sustain a welcoming community for everyone at Northampton.

For more information, please contact Task Force co-chairs Dr. Michael McGovern, Vice President, Academic Affairs and Maria T. Donate, Associate Professor, Counseling.

Student Activities, Clubs and Organizations
Student-led clubs and organizations support NCC's diversity commitment through activities and programming throughout the school year.

Safe Space
Safe SpaceNorthampton supports the equal treatment of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. We believe all members of our campus community should feel comfortable being themselves. To ensure a welcoming environment, the college created Safe Space.

When you walk around campus, you will find the Safe Space logo in many offices. The logo identifies faculty and staff members with resources, sensitivity, and understanding toward the LGBT community.
