Healthcare Career Certification Programs

The Center for Business and Industry - Healthcare Education offers instructional programs which are excellent starting points for individuals wishing to embark on a rewarding career in the healthcare field.

Nurse Aide
The Nurse Aide Program is an intensive 128 hour course which can be taken part-time as an evening/weekend class or full-time during the day in select locations. This program prepares the participant with the entry-level skills needed to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Competency Examination (NNAAP) for placement on the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Registry and begin a successful career as a Nurse Aide in a long term care facility, hospital or other healthcare setting. This course is an excellent starting point in the healthcare field. The next session starts March 5, 2012 in Bethlehem.

ALL REQUIREMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE FIRST CLASS.
If all requirements cannot be met by the first class, please adhere to the college refund policy which states: "You must withdraw one business day prior to the first class to receive a full refund. If you withdraw prior to the start of class but less than one full business day,
you will receive a 50% refund. Once class has started, there are NO REFUNDS."

Certified Pharmacy Technician Programs
Employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase by 32% from 2006-2016 due to the increased number of middle-aged and elderly people. Our programs provide students with skills that are important in assisting the pharmacist in the preparation and dispensing of medication. Training includes medication order processing, inventories, compounding, packaging, use of a prescription balance, HIPAA privacy act and computers. This program also prepares graduates for certification as Certified Pharmacy Technicians. Both levels are taught by experienced facilitators with years of hands-on, practical experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

Level I Training
Ideal for new hires, our Level I Certified Pharmacy Technician Program, includes medical terminology: establishing and maintaining patient profiles; preparing insurance form claims; prescription interpretation; basic calculations; and stocking and taking inventory of prescription and over-the-counter medications. Upon satisfactory completion of this course, the students are eligible to take the national certification exam as offered by the National Healthcare Association (NHA). Fee includes tuition and materials. Examination fee of $105 is not included. Students must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or a GED. Next session starts February 7, 2012.

Level II Training
Ideal for individuals currently working as Pharmacy Technicians who are in need of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or are interested in additional skills training. The Level II Pharmacy Technician Program provides an increased knowledge of aseptic and compounding issues relating to healthcare facilities; pharmacy related equipment, practices and procedures used in healthcare facilities; increased knowledge of pharmacy related computer functions; and more. Next session starts May 8, 2012.

Personal Care Home Administrator
Northampton Community College's "Personal Care Home Administrator" program is officially approved by the Department of Public Welfare - under 55 PA Code 2600.64 (a) (2) This program satisfies the Pennsylvania requirements for obtaining (100 hrs) training for certification as a Personal Care Home Administrator. It consists of 20 individual modules, covered in 31 evenings of training. This program is offered in the Spring semester only.

Scholarship must be applied for and approval received PRIOR to beginning the 100-hour Personal Care Home Administrator Course.

DPW Orientation Class
Participants must attend and complete the Department of Public Welfare orientation class for administrators.
Please note: Orientation class may be completed while taking individual modules, but must be completed prior to the end of the series.     • Licensed registered nurse
    • Associates degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university
    • Licensed practical nurse with 1 year work experience
    • Licensed Nursing Home Administrator
    • High school diploma/GED plus two years direct care/administrator experience in homes with less than eight residents

Local Anesthesia for Licensed Dental Hygienists
Provide licensed dental hygienists with the required knowledge and skills to administer local anesthesia in clinical settings. This 30 hour course will include a review of essential anatomy and neurophysiology, the pharmacology of anesthetic and vasoconstriction agents, client assessment, armamentarium, local anesthetic complications and their management. Instruction and practice of local anesthesia delivery techniques will occur in a clinical lab setting. The next session of the class begins March 24, 2011. All requirements must be completed and returned by March 16, 2011.
