What is Service-Learning?

Service-learning provides students with the opportunity to make the connection between course concepts and "real world" experience. Students who enroll in my Sociology and Anthropology classes have the opportunity to participate in a service-learning project.

Service-learning projects require that students volunteer to work in a community agency for 20 hours over the course of the semester. In addition, students must complete assignments that link their community experiences back to course material.

Service-learning allows for LEARNING IN ACTION - students can learn from both classroom experiences AND from their "hands on" community experiences.

Monroe students have completed service-learning projects with the following community agencies:

  • Arlington Elementary School
  • American Cancer Society
  • American Red Cross
  • Big Brother/Big Sister (one year commitment)
  • Brookmont Health Care Center
  • Eldred Elementary School
