On Saturday, November 14, five nursing students from Northampton Community College donated four hours of their time and participated in STORIES, a new program offered in conjunction with Girl Scouts of America. Michelle Fritch, Paraskevi Katelas, Selena McMaster, Shari Shoemaker, and Sean Stuber shared their personal journeys into the nursing profession with local Girl Scouts who may be considering nursing as a future career choice. The Scouts got to hear about the students' successes and mistakes before visiting simulated "health centers" to try their hand at basic clinical skills.
According to Margery Lafferty, the nursing support specialist at Northampton Community College, the goal of the program was to create a conversational exchange "to assist the younger students in deciding what career path is for them and what personal changes they can make while still in middle school to help their future dreams come true. It was "win-win," she said.
Northampton's Center for Healthcare Education assisted with the program.
