Goodwin is the author of best-selling Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln and No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II, which won the Pulitzer Prize for history.  She also wrote the bestsellers Wait Till Next Year, Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream, and The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys.

She is often called upon by the media to comment upon and analyze presidential issues.  She  taught at Harvard University, was assistant to President Lyndon Johnson during his last year in the White House, and aided President Johnson with his memoirs.

Team of Rivals illuminates Lincoln's rise from obscurity to prominence over three gifted rivals of national reputation to become president.  The book focuses on Lincoln's political mastery and how his presidency shaped the office.

Goodwin's talk is part of The Civil War: The Meaning of Freedom: 1865-Today, Northampton's year-long exploration of the progress made toward American ideals since the Civil War.  Most of the programming has been made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, matched by generous donors.  Community partners include the Bethlehem Area Public Library, Bethlehem Area School District, Eastern Monroe Public Library, Historic Bethlehem Partnership, Monroe County Historical Association, and the Stroudsburg Area School District.
