Hawley Welcomes Northampton Community College

July 28, 2010

Northampton Community College is opening a new site at 94 Main Avenue, across from Bingham Park, in Hawley.  An open house was held on August 4 to give the public a chance to tour the premises, meet the staff and get a preview of the classes the College will offer there.

Mary Beth Wood, executive director of the Wayne Economic Development Corporation and chair of the Workforce Wayne Board, spoke during a ribbon cutting ceremony at the open house.

"The location is great," says Bill Schaffer, a Bushkill resident who works at the College.  "It will be convenient for residents of both Pike and Wayne counties, and it will make it easier for us to work closely with other community organizations, including CareerLink.  The fact that it's so close to the library is also a plus."

Northampton previously maintained micro sites in both Honesdale and Shohola.  "By consolidating, we will be able to offer more comprehensive services," says Schaffer.

Residents of both counties will be able to enroll in credit or non-credit classes in Hawley.  All of the courses leading to specialized diplomas in medical billing or office skills will be provided there, as well as a variety of personal and professional enrichment classes in computing, first aid, CPR and leisure activities.

Northampton Community College is also one of the largest providers of adult, family and workforce literacy classes in the region.  Those classes, too, will be taught in Hawley.

Starting next summer, local schoolchildren will be able to come to Hawley for NCC's popular Horizons for Youth program.  The program features activities that are both fun and educational.
