Community Partners for Student Success (COMPASS) is the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley initiative that identifies, strengthens, and promotes community-connected schools so that all Lehigh Valley students succeed and graduate from high school ready to lead meaningful and productive lives. COMPASS seeks to implement the community school model; a holistic education reform strategy that focuses on transforming the school into the "hub" of the neighborhood by organizing a wide range of programs and services around a common vision to serve students, families, and community members. Community schools are about doing business differently, through coordinated and intentional partnerships, to achieve better outcomes for students, families, and communities.
Northampton Community College is the lead partner to three community school sites: DeFranco Elementary & Bangor Area Middle School in the Bangor Area School District in Northampton County and Fountain Hill Elementary School in the Bethlehem Area School District of Lehigh County. As the lead partner, Northampton Community College employs the Community School Director, the essential element of what makes the model work at the ground-level. Northampton Community College provides additional support to the school sites through funding opportunities and connections to other community resources.
