Math graduates can make smooth transitions to several four-year educational institutions with transfer agreements with Northampton. The program is also applicable for students majoring in computer science, engineering or secondary math education. At 60 credits, this associate in science degree gets the student halfway to a bachelor's degree, with the prospect of a rewarding career.
The Mathematics Department offers remedial and college level courses; including College Algebra, Statistics, Foundations of Mathematics for education majors, Trigonometry, the Calculus sequence, Differential Equations, and Discrete Mathematics. Graphing calculators and computer programs are used to facilitate understanding, conceptualization, and analysis of complex real world problems. The department operates a computer mathematics lab in College Center. The lab consists of 35 personal computers with various software. Academic Systems Interactive Mathematics is used for some remedial courses. Maple Mathematical software is used in Calculus, Differential Equations, and Discrete Mathematics courses. Other math tutorial software are available in the college's Learning Center and Library.
