English as a Second language testing

How can I take an ESL course?
Before you register for an ESL courses, you need to take a test.  But students who don't know any English at all can register for level I and not take the test.

Is it possible to fail this test?
No.  You will not
fail this test.  Even if you get a low score, we have a class for you. 

Do I have to take the TOEFL?
No.  We do not require the TOEFL test.  But you can practice for the TOEFL here if you are transfering to another college or university.

When is the test? (For Spring 2008)

English as a Second Language (ESL) students come to the ESL Department (Richardson Hall 215) for the ESL placement test during any of these times:

  •  November: 
      Every day (Monday-Friday), 9:30am-2:00pm
      (Note:  The college will be closed Nov. 26-27 for Thanksgiving Holiday)

  • December:
      Every Day (Monday-Friday), Dec. 1-19, 9:30am-2:00pm
    and
      Tuesday, Dec. 2, 8:00am-6:30pm
      Tuesday, Dec. 16, 8:00am-6:30pm


  •  January:

      Monday, Jan. 5, 9:30am-12:00 noon
      Tuesday, Jan. 6, 8:00am-6:30pm
      Wednesday, Jan. 7, 9:30am-12:00 noon
      Thursday, Jan. 8, 9:30am-12:00 noon
      
     Monday, Jan. 12, 9:30am-12:00 noon

     Tuesday, Jan. 13, 4:00pm-6:30pm
     Wednesday, Jan. 14, 9:30am-12:00 noon
     Thursday, Jan. 15, 9:30am-2:00 pm
     Friday, Jan. 16, 9:30am-2:00 pm

(Appointments are not necessary for the scheduled tests)

There is no time limit for the test, but it usually takes one and a half (1.5) hours.
