A path to many possible careers: Advertising, politics, journalism, public relations - a career in any of these diverse fields can be exciting and fulfilling. And it can start with a degree in Communication Studies. Northampton’s Communication Studies program provides students with the attitude, skills and knowledge that will allow them to communicate effectively, clearly, persuasively, and vividly. Specific skills students will demonstrate are critical thinking, listening, problem solving, speech composition and presentation, conflict management, and relationship maintenance.
Students who complete the program will also be able to demonstrate proficiency in oral communication, including one-on-one conversation, small group communication, and public speaking. Students will exhibit an understanding of communication ethics, with an ability to communicate in ways that promote dialogue, and demonstrate sensitivity toward a diverse audience.
The Communication Studies program offers courses that are commonly taken during the first two years of a bachelor’s degree in the field. Working closely with an advisor, students can plan a schedule that will prepare them for entry to a four-year college. With a BA, students can look forward to employment opportunities in a wide range of areas, including health care, the performing arts, education, the media, radio and TV broadcasting and more.
