Rebecca Cimera, Engineering Student

Rebecca Cimera found out about Northampton Community College's SMaRT Scholars program from the best possible source: her older sister, who had already graduated from NCC along with another older sibling. Rebecca and her brother, Matthew, are both students in the engineering program, and have another sibling also currently attending Northampton. The entire Cimera family took advantage of attending a college that was close to home and offered a number of career options so that they could find fields that challenged them.

"My older siblings told me how much they enjoyed their experience at NCC and how it gave them the skills they needed to thrive. NCC has also helped me assess whether I truly wanted to major in my field of engineering," says Cimera. "I also feel that there are many advantages of being part of the SMaRT Scholars program, including growth in academic and real-life application knowledge."

While other girls here age were playing with Barbie dolls, Cimera was more fascinated with building blocks and imagining a world shaped through building and design. She sees engineering as more than just a branch of science or technology; she also sees it as an art form used to design, build and create a whole new future.

"I chose this program because I wanted to help people and I strongly enjoyed math. My high school physics teacher helped me to believe in myself and helped me to envision myself as a successful engineer," says Cimera. "Engineering is a field that can aid other people and can help to potentially design the future with innovation."

Cimera has her sights set on transferring to a four-year school beyond her NCC graduation, and plans to further her studies as an electrical engineer with an involvement in education. At NCC, she is also involved in the Leadership program, Honors program, and a number of clubs. The balancing act is giving her good practice for the future.

"I have some to realize that not only do I want to become an engineer, but I also want to have the ability to teach, as well," says Cimera. "Inspiration, encouragement, and a shared vision or a common goal can lead us to so many things. The courses of the ropes are always switching, but with good people in our lives, I feel that we can achieve and go forward."
