Service Learning at its Best

Service learning has been an option in many courses for the past 7 years. Initially the pedagogy was introduced into sociology and Spanish classes. Service learning has expanded to include such diverse disciplines as computer science, biology, psychology, dental hygiene, journalism, political science, nursing, criminal justice, English, and communications. The following projects* are examples of the fine work being conducted by NCC faculty, students and community partners:

  • Supporting Actions for Engagement ( SAFE ): 3 year grant project dedicated to Homeland Security and service learning

  • The "Poll Crew" rocks the presidential vote: through funding from the US Election Assistance Commission and the HELP AMERICA VOTE ACT ( HAVA ), students assisted at the polls and county registration offices

  • Trinity ARK Soup Kitchen: NCC faculty, staff, and students support efforts to aid hungry and homeless people
  • Flood Resources Center, a project of The Student Leadership Program and State Farm Youth Advisory Board (State Farm Insurance)
