Help America Vote Act Grant (HAVA)
This $25,000 grant was funded through the United States Election Assistance Commission. Service learning students and the general student population were recruited to serve as poll workers on election day, as well as provide support to the Monroe, Lehigh and Northampton counties' voter registration offices prior to election day.
Over 200 students applied to this program. They were trained to work at the polls, which included operating the voting machines. Students also spent many hours providing assistance in the offices filing, sorting, and addressing envelopes. They were given a "behind the scenes" look at what actually happens prior to pulling the lever at the polls. Because of the high voter registration and voter turnout during the 2004 presidential election, NCC student support was essential. Students were able to become a vital part of the election process - up close and personal.
