Trinity ARK Soup Kitchen

Collaboration between NCC and the soup kitchen has been ongoing since spring 2001. Over 32 service learning students have assisted in the preparation, serving and clean up of the meals at the weekly soup kitchen. This is not an ordinary soup kitchen. Patrons sit down in the church hall at tables set with placemats, utensils and a drink. They are then served their food individually on a plate, that was prepared by the volunteers. There are no cafeteria style lines in this kitchen. Patrons are treated with extreme respect - and that respect is returned in kind. The atmosphere at the kitchen is familial. One morning at the soup kitchen will change your world.

Biology students also participated in a service learning project at the kitchen in fall 2002. Grant dollars were used to help refurbish the kitchen and create a stage/storage area for the tables and chairs. Four students, a community member and faculty member made this a reality.

In addition to NCC service learning students volunteering, faculty, staff and students have been providing a meal the first Saturday of each month since fall 2003. The culinary talents of the NCC community have produced such meals as lasagna, meatloaf, soups, chicken casseroles and lots of satisfied customers!
