"When stroke occurs, it's an emergency," says Martin J. Fowler Jr., DO, medical director of St. Luke's Stroke Program. "Clot-busting medication can only be given within the first three hours after the onset of symptoms. So if you or someone you're with experiences stroke symptoms, it is vitally important that you act FAST and call 911 immediately."
F ace - Ask the person to smile. Does the face look uneven?
A rm - Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift down?
S peech - Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase like "the sky is blue." Does his or her speech sound strange?
T ime - If you observe any of these signs, note the time the symptoms started and call 9-1-1.
