Student from NCC Wins Advertising Award for Fifth Consecutive Year
For the fifth consecutive year, a student from Northampton Community College has won the prestigious American Advertising Federation (ADDY) Award. April Harold, a resident of Hellertown, a graduate of Saucon Valley High School and a communication design major at Northampton Community College (NCC), has won a bronze ADDY award for her poster in commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. The poster also won NCC’s Martin Luther King, Jr. annual poster contest earlier this year.
Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation, the ADDY Awards competition is one of the industry’s most prestigious contests and the world’s largest advertising competition. Winners are chosen based on creative excellence.
The stunning black and white poster contains pictures of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks inlaid in circles to suggest the wheels of the Montgomery bus Parks boarded in 1955, setting in motion the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The word “change” links the pictures. Harold designed the poster in the Illustrator CS2 computer graphic design program.
Harold’s poster was created in NCC instructor Traci Anfuso-Young’s class “Digital Design and Topography.” The class watched the documentary “Mighty Times: the Legacy of Rosa Parks” to gain an understanding of the civil rights era. Harold was one of 35 entrants into the contest, some of whom submitted more than one poster.
Harold’s submission was chosen because “it delivered the message and imagery of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks and the headline was visually strong,” says Anfuso-Young.
“The poster represents change, freedom and hope and the fact that Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks changed the lives of many people,” Harold says.
Harold, described by her instructor Anfuso-Young as a “bright, outstanding young designer,” plans to continue her education toward a bachelor’s degree at Kutztown University.
