Faculty Innovation Grants Move NCC Forward
 August 31, 2006

The Northampton Community College Foundation has awarded two Faculty Innovation Grants (FIGS) for the 2006-07 year. The purpose of the grants is to provide funding for projects that keep NCC in the forefront of how students learn.

Projects chosen this year include:

  • Information Literacy.

This project will give students the opportunity to learn research skills to help them succeed. The project will address the knowledge students should have about the research process: how to determine what information to seek, find quality research tools (databases that are peer-reviewed, for example), evaluate information sources, use information to make a point, and utilize the information legally.

Based on outcomes measurements created by the American Library Association, faculty will evaluate whether students’ participation in information literacy sessions has improved their skills.

The faculty team working on this project is comprised of Kiki Anastasakos, assistant professor of political science; Allison Carpenter, assistant professor of English; Elizabeth Bodien, assistant professor of sociology; Audrey Harvey, instructor, information services librarian; and Deanna Robinson, assistant professor and information services librarian.

  • Interactive Student Response System.

Members of this team will use a new polling technology in their classes this semester. The software, Turning Point, works with PowerPoint to allow professors to quiz students with multiple choice and true/false questions. Each student can then respond, anonymously, with a wireless keypad. The professors, with the click of a button, can show the correct answer, providing instant feedback for student and professors on students’ knowledge of the subject matter.

The faculty team working on this project is comprised of Wendi Achey, instructor of business and marketing; assistant professor of mathematics; Annie Laurie Meyers, associate professor of business/office administration; Nancy Moreau, associate professor of education; and Wayne Moreau, adjunct in chemistry.

Faculty Innovation Grants are available for both full-time and adjunct faculty, and teams are encouraged to apply. Cross-disciplinary work and collaboration with colleagues is also encouraged.

The faculty members’ hometowns are as follows:

Allentown: Deanna Robinson, Annie Laurie Meyers
Bethlehem: Allison Carpenter, Wendy Achey
Easton: Audrey Harvey
Gouldsboro: Nancy Moreau, Wayne Moreau
Kempton: Elizabeth Bodien
Belle Mead, NJ: Kiki Anastaskos,
