To Everest and Back – With Tons of Litter in Tow
Imagine climbing 29,035 feet to the summit of Mt. Everest and then heading back down—but, this time, toting 5,000 pounds of trash (bottles, tent poles, plastic) left by earlier climbers.
Mountaineer Steven Goryl will present his expedition to Mount Everest and his mission to remove abundant debris from the slopes on Thursday, April 19, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Northampton Community College’s Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. The talk is in observance of Earth Day. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
Goryl’s initial work in 1994 led the way for further environmental work on this wonder of the world. (Since that expedition, the government of Nepal requires every climbing group to remove at least 2,000 pounds of litter.)
Goryl, who was awarded the David Brower Award for Environmental Action by the American Alpine Club, will describe his 2 ½ month journey, with its pitfalls and crises, including being trapped for 5 days in a tent at 26,000 feet. He will bring climbing gear to show the audience.
