Exhibit on Iraq War To Be Hosted by NCC

“Eyes Wide Open,” a traveling exhibit about the human cost of the war in Iraq will be shown on Tuesday, September 25, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Northampton Community College (NCC), 3835 Green Pond Road, in the Quad, between the College Center and Kopecek Hall.

Created by the American Friends Service Committee in 2004, the exhibit debuted in Chicago and has since journeyed to more than 75 cities across the country. The visual focus of the exhibit at NCC will be 170 pairs of boots representing each of the 170 servicemen and servicewomen from Pennsylvania who have died in the War in Iraq to date. Additionally, there will be a Wall of Remembrance to remember Iraqi civilians who have perished during the war and a multimedia display exploring the history, cost and consequences of the war. NCC students will read the names of Pennsylvania soldiers who died in the war.

“It is important to host the exhibit at NCC,” says Vasiliki Anastasakos, NCC Assistant Professor, political science, “as several of our students are in the military and have served in Iraq or have loved ones deployed there. Last year I had a 19-year-old female student in one of my distance learning classes who was taking a course with me while she was in Iraq. So it is essential that we remember those whose lives have been interrupted by fighting away from home and to engage in a dialogue about the human cost of war.”

The exhibit’s presentation at NCC is sponsored by the College’s Peace Forum, Political Science Club, Art Student Association, Progressive Student Alliance, and Student Senate.

In case of rain, the exhibit will be held in the Laub Lounge in College Center.
