NCC Executive-in-Residence Anita M. Smith to Give Lecture

Anita M. Smith, president and CEO of Capital BlueCross, will present a public lecture at Northampton Community College on Tuesday, October 30, as part of the college’s Executive-in-Residence program. Titled “The Changing Dynamics of Health Care and the Need for Leadership,” the lecture will be held at 11 a.m. in the Lipkin Theatre at Kopecek Hall on the Main Campus. Smith will also spend the day at the college meeting with students.

As one of only five women in the United States to head a Blue plan, Smith is responsible for the management of a multi-billion dollar health insurance company with more than 2300 employees. In her leadership role with Capital BlueCross, she has led the company’s successful transformation to a full-service insurer and the region’s market leader.

Smith plays a role in the national insurance industry on the board of directors for the national Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. She is also president and CEO of Capital Advantage Insurance Company and chairman of the board, president and CEO of one of the nation’s top-rated HMOs, Keystone Health Plan Central, Inc. Among her many community involvements, Smith has served on the board of the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, and is a member of Pre-K Counts in Pennsylvania.

In 2003, Smith was named one of Pennsylvania’s “Best 50 Women in Business,” and also received the YWCA Women of Excellence Award in 2000. Smith graduated from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.

NCC’s Executive-in-Residence is made possible through the Hal Shaffer Memorial Endowment. The October 30 lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, call Northampton Community College at 610-861-5519.
