NCC Students To Present at Beacon Conference

Six Northampton Community College (NCC) students have been selected to present their research, writing and poster presentations at the 2007 Beacon Conference for Student Scholars from Two-Year Colleges. The conference will be held on June 1, 2007 at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York.

This annual conference showcases the writing, research and presentation skills of students at community colleges throughout Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Maryland.

The students’ papers were submitted earlier this year and judged by a panel of volunteer readers on quality and originality of research and writing. Categories cover a wide range of disciplines ranging from the arts, literature and philosophy to allied health, gender studies and technology. The top three papers in each category are selected for presentation at the conference, which is sponsored by a coalition of member colleges. New to this year’s conference are poster presentations, which highlight research in poster form, accompanied by some graphics.

Participating students from NCC are:

Ivy Lynn Fox of Easton, who will present a paper, “Homo versus Hetero Familial: Separate but Equal.”

Ryan Moore of Effort, who will present a paper, “Illusions of Gaia: Communication Theory in a Multiplayer Gaming Environment.”

Cathy Guptill of Bethlehem, who will present a paper, “One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure: A Look at Compulsive Hoarding.”

Samantha Curtiss of Mountainhome, whose poster presentation is entitled “Schizophrenia and Its Portrayal in the Media.”

Rebecca Danweber of Hellertown, whose poster presentation is entitled “Poverty and Inequality as a Result of Social Stratification in the United States.”

Suzanne Ramirez of Douglasville, whose poster presentation is entitled “On the Mountain.”
