NCC Wins Place on President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
Within a week after Hurricane Katrina hit, NCC students, faculty and staff were at the ready, giving supplies, money and their presence to victims of the disaster. In recognition of this immediate and compassionate outreach, NCC has earned a place on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This distinction honors civic engagement on the part of the nation’s colleges and universities, especially in the wake of the Gulf Coast hurricanes of August 2005.
- In that very first week, NCC raised $7,000 for America’s Second Harvest, which rushed water and food to hurricane victims.
- Student clubs raised $378 for gas that sent two NCC truck driver instructors to the Gulf, bearing supplies for displaced people.
- Veterinary tech students held a raffle netting $3,000 for pet rescue and donated pet evacuation kits.
- The College adopted Southwestern Louisiana Technical School, lending support through financial contributions.
- The College donated free tuition for online courses to students in the disaster-affected area.
- Adjunct faculty went to the scene to offer counseling.
- Monroe Campus Early Childhood Association collected health and hygiene supplies and delivered them to the Red Cross.
- Children at the Hannig Child Care Center held a lemonade sale that generated $220 for “children that got water in their houses.”
- Eleven students in the National Guard, a student and a faculty member headed to the area to offer help.
“Being on the Honor Roll is an absolute honor,” says Debra Bohr, NCC service learning administrator. “It puts NCC’s out there as an institution that is community oriented. NCC is committed to our community and beyond.”
She added that there are a multitude of ways that NCC serves the community on an ongoing basis, including, to name only a few, the service opportunities connected to many courses, monthly participation in a community soup kitchen and the Holiday Hope Chest through United Way, which provides presents to people in need at the holidays.
