Northampton Community College Celebrates Excellence at Staff Appreciation Dinner
May 19, 2006

Dedication to Northampton Community College , passion for advancing its goal of educating thousands of students, and warm collegiality characterized an exuberant Staff Appreciation Dinner at the College’s Spartan Center on May 18.

Following rollicking entertainment by faculty and staff members of the “Spartan Sisters,” and an uproarious game of “Family Feud,” played between the “Dysfunctional Family” and the “Jinglheimer Scmidt Family teams,” awards were presented for outstanding professional performance and years of service.

President Dr. Arthur L. Scott lauded the Lady Spartan Women’s Softball Team for two consecutive undefeated seasons and the longest collegiate winning streak in the country, at any level, winning a standing ovation for the team’s coach, Sam Carrodo.

Dr. Scott thanked NCC’s faculty and staff for making the institution a “college on the move…the result of the good work each and everyone does each day.”

A special award, the Trustees’ Distinguished Service Award, was presented to David A. Reed, a trustee at NCC for thirty-one years and one of the longest serving trustees at any of Pennsylvania’s fourteen community colleges. The award has been given only a handful of times in NCC’s history.

Reed, a resident of Easton, joined NCC’s Board of Trustees in June 1975 as a representative from the Easton Area School District. He was trustee board chairman from 1989 through 2004.

“His wisdom as a colleague and his quiet leadership as chair have seen this College implement so many programs to meet the needs of our community,” said Karl Stackhouse, who served on the Board with Green for twenty years.

During Reed’s tenure, NCC’s Monroe Campus was established and expanded twice. Land recently purchased by the College will add another campus to Monroe County. Reed also helped found NCC facilities in Bartonsville, in Pike and Wayne Counties, in Bethlehem’s Lehigh Valley Industrial Park, and in 54 locations, culminating with the newest site on the Southside of Bethlehem.

The late Thomas Marakovits, professor of criminal justice, was honored with the prestigious Christiansen Award for Excellence in Teaching. Marakovits’ widow, Ruth, accepted the award, and other members of his family were also among the 400+ guests in attendance.

Marakovits was the coordinator of NCC’s criminal justice program. Marakovits came to NCC with a distinguished background in law enforcement. Prior to joining NCC’s faculty, he served for twenty-five years in the Pennsylvania State Police. He was named “State Policeman of the Year” in 1984. He also won awards for excellence in teaching at Alvernia College and for outstanding achievement at LCCC, where he earned an associate degree before going on to complete a bachelor’s degree from Kutztown University and a master’s degree at Temple University.

Marakovits died on October 26, 2005. A tree was planted in his memory by his students on May 2, 2006.

Debra Doll of Saylorsburg received the Professional Staff Excellence Award. Doll was praised for her high level of enthusiasm and excellence and for being an asset to NCC second to none.

Mary Lou Colis of Nazareth received the Support Staff Excellence Award. Her smile was described as contagious and her command of a myriad of scheduling details unwavering and meticulous.

Traci Anfuso-Young of hometown received the Excellence in Teaching by an Adjunct Faculty Award. Anfuso-Young, an alumna of NCC, was praised for her remarkable devotion to students, high energy and dedication to helping her students succeed.

Joseph Mamanna, of Easton received the Excellence in Non-Credit Instruction Award. Mamanna, described as a “super teacher,” was lauded for “knowing how to teach and making learning fun.” He instills his passion for Spanish into his students.
