SMaRT Career Choices for Girls Workshops To Be Held at NCC
Girls in grades 5 – 8 can have an afternoon of fun exploring careers at SMaRT (Science, Math and Related Technologies) Career Choices for Girls Workshops, on Saturday, November 10 from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. at Northampton Community College’s Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Main Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
Choose four one-hour, hands-on workshops from among:
“Hey, there’s Science in My T.V. Show!” Participants will try out the blood typing, dusting for fingerprints, extracting DNA, and more featured on shows such as CSI.
“Want to Make Some Money?” Starting with one dollar, students will see how to make money grow through interest and related concepts.
“What is the Iron Doing in My Blood?” Using computer visualization, youngsters can get a molecule-sized view of proteins in action, doing their work in the blood.
“Engineer Your World.” When real experiments are unfeasible or too expensive, what do scientists do? Participants will find out firsthand at this workshop.
“The Science of Soap.” Lab experiments take the mystery out of common cleaning materials.
“Math in the Real World.” The odds add up as participants see math’s many roles, whether winning on a TV game show or making discoveries in archaeology.
“The Exciting Unseen World of a Pond.” Students will peer close-up at algae, protozoa, bacteria, and other tiny residents of a pond.
“The Magical World of Chemistry.” Youngsters will discover a world of career opportunities in the science that affects every aspect of the universe.
“Intro to 3-D Worlds with Alice.” Participants will make the skater do amazing moves in a 3-D simulated milieu.
“Experimental Foods.” What makes bread rise? How do methods of cooking affect food’s nutritional value? Students will discover the answers at this workshop.
In addition to the children’s workshops, there will also be a free workshop for parents about SMaRT careers from 3:30 – 4:15 p.m.
