Middle School Girls Invited to Learn About SMaRT *(Science, Math and Related Technologies) Careers

Forensic science, computer animation, and biotechnology are just a few of the workshops to be offered to girls in grades 5-8 at Northampton Community College’s (NCC) “SMaRT Careers for Girls” on Monday, October 9, 1:00 – 4:45 p.m. at the Monroe Campus, 3 Old Mill Road, Tannersville.

“We know from research studies that girls of middle school age downplay the possibility of science and math careers for themselves,” says Cindy Adams, co-coordinator of SMaRT Careers for Girls. “We want to intrigue them to think about how they wish to spend the rest of their lives and to see math and science fields as attractive options.

“We need creative thinkers from all backgrounds in these fields, and we hope to increase the diversity of these occupations. At present women are underrepresented in math, science and technical professions.”

Parents can attend simultaneous free workshops, “Helping Girls Prepare for SMaRT Careers,” a “SMaRT Experiences” panel discussion by women in technical fields, or a hands-on workshop exploring “Secrets of Fibonacci.” The cost is $7 per girl with our without parental participation. The deadline for registration is September 29. Call 570-620-9221 or visit http://www.northampton.edu/course-search/noncredit.asp.
