A concert to benefit the people of Darfur, Sudan, will be held at Northampton Community College’s Lipkin Theatre at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14. The concert will feature NCC alumnus and Philadelphia musician Alex Radus and his band, as well as an African drum ensemble and two bands featuring NCC students and staff. Tickets for the event are $5 for students and seniors, $7 for non-students.
A talented guitarist, singer and songwriter, Radus describes his folk/jazz/blues music as “acoustic indie rock.” The Courier News of New Jersey called Radus “a master guitarist whose songwriting continues to flourish."
According to UN figures, the humanitarian emergency in Darfur now affects more than 3.4 million people. This includes more than 1.8 million internally displaced persons and approximately 200,000 refugees in eastern Chad. In Darfur alone, tens of thousands of people have been killed and more than two million have fled their homes since rebels took up arms in 2003 against the government.
The Darfur benefit is being sponsored by NCC’s Political Science Club, the Progressive Student Alliance, and the Forum on Peace, Justice & Conflict Resolution. Students from these clubs will donate all proceeds from the event to a Darfur charity. Last spring, NCC hosted Benjamin Ajek, one of the “lost boys of Sudan.” Ajek spoke movingly of the horrors of being a Darfur refugee, intensifying students’ concern for the people there.
For tickets, call 610-861-5324 or visit www.northampton.edu. The Lipkin Theatre is located in Kopecek Hall on NCC’s Main Campus at 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township, PA.
