NCC Student Wins Earth Day Poster Contest
April 10, 2008

Jasmine Lea Hoskins (pictured left), a fine arts major at Northampton Community College (NCC), was chosen the winner of a poster design contest for the College’s Environmental Task Force (ETF). Hoskins, a graduate of Northampton High School and a resident of Bath, created a poster to advertise the Earth Day events planned by the ETF.

As part of a class project with the purpose to give students real-world work with deadlines and specifications, students taking computer graphics and desktop publishing were required to design posters for the ETF. The computer graphic students were asked to create an original image while considering the typography and how it would compliment the image they created. The desktop publishing students were asked to concentrate on layout and typography in QuarkXpress, a page layout program. Typography is the style, arrangement, or appearance of the letter forms and information on the page.

Hoskins’ poster (pictured left) was created in NCC instructor Gayle Hendricks' computer graphics class. The eye-catching poster portrays images of different types of people over a background of greenery and trees. Hoskins designed the program using the Adobe Illustrator computer graphic design program.

Hendricks contacted Donna Acerra, NCC associate professor and president of the ETF, at the beginning of the spring semester to see if the ETF had any need for student work. The timing was perfect as the ETF was in need of a poster to promote upcoming Earth Day events.

"Gayle Hendricks was a real star in this. It was her idea,” said Acerra. "It was hard to choose a winner. All the students did a fabulous job. The talent in the design classes is really amazing."

Hoskins’ poster was selected from all the entries by a committee made up of ETF members. All of the poster entries will be displayed in the glass case outside the cafeteria.
