This semester, nursing students at NCC were presented with an opportunity for service. Nine University of Pennsylvania College of Nursing students, as part of a nursing course there, will be traveling to rural
Honduras
later this month to provide obstetrical health care to the community there. The students will be escorted by their nursing professor,
Mamie
Guidera
, a nurse midwife and instructor.
The University of Pennsylvania students need to bring supplies with them, and that’s where the NCC nursing students and faculty were able to lend a hand! The students worked hard by organizing a drive for needed items such as shoelaces for tying umbilical cords after birth, onesies, diapers, vitamins, pacifiers, infant supplies, baby bottles, bandages, and tape. Their hard work paid off. After getting the word out and making a public request on Blackboard, the donations started to pour in.
“I delivered a packed van filled to the top with supplies to Philadelphia two weeks ago,” Margie Lafferty, BSN, RN, and NCC nursing support specialist said. “Their gratitude was evident and our student response was overwhelming.”
