New Student Senators Already at Work
August 13, 2008

Summer is not over yet. And while some people are taking the time to savor every last minute before classes begin again, the NCC student senators at the Main Campus are already meeting and making plans for the upcoming academic year.

Josh Phillips, chairperson. Joseph Fox, vice chairperson, Giancarlo Sanchez, treasurer, and Lisett Ramirez, secretary, gathered together on August 13 to discuss what the Senate’s agenda would be for 2008/2009.

First up? “We will be holding elections this fall for eight general members,”
Josh Phillips said. “We’d like to invite any students who are interested in running for a spot to an information session.”

The sessions will be held on September 2 and 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in College Center Room 236. Free food will be provided to all those who attend.

Joseph Fox would like to see a more diverse group of students run for the Senate.

“We’d like to see other departments in the College encourage students to run for Senate,” he explained. “Often you see students from the Honors Program or Liberal Art majors run. It would be good to see, for instance, someone going for a technical degree run. They might have great ideas to share. Everyone can make a difference and have something important to add.”

The Senate also has some fun – even mysterious – plans in the works.

“Right now we’re working on something for Quadfest,” Josh said. “It’s a secret right now. All I can say is it will be an activity with prizes.”

A favorite student event, the Halloween Party, is also being sponsored by the Senate. It will take place the Friday before Halloween.

“I’m also hoping to get together a Senate Team to participate in the Light the Night Walk on October 6,” Josh said. The evening walk is an event to help build awareness and raise funds for cures for leukemia and lymphoma.

The Senate is also planning to review the mission statement in the bi-laws to make sure it is current and are prepared to revise it if needed.

NCC’s Student Senate is a student governing body that represents the students of NCC. The meetings are open to the public and students are welcome to bring issues, concerns, or comments. For more information, visit the Student Senate website.
