The many talents of Northampton Community College students were recognized at this year’s Student Celebration on April 29 in the
Spartan Center. The event honored students who went above and beyond their usual college day routines, by acknowledging non-academic accomplishments during the 2007-2008 school year.
Chairperson of the Student Senate Eden Fimiano introduced Mardi Closson, vice president of student affairs/dean of students. Mardi expressed high regards for each student, stating that “This celebration is recognizing the wonderful talents of students. All talents are unique and there are diverse special interests, making NCC a great place.”
After the first group of awards was handed out, the audience, consisting of faculty, staff, students and family members, got to enjoy an entertainment break by the JAM
dancers. The latter half of the celebration included a preview of what people can see this Friday night when NCC presents NCC Idol. The president of the Hispanic American Cultural Club, Diana Hernández, introduced one of the contestants who will compete: Jalessa Dallam gave an impressive performance of Alicia Key’s song, “No One.”
Break dancers Keith Alford and Isaias Rosa performed and got the
audience clapping with their dance moves to music provided by DJ Danny. NCC’s mascot Sam Spartan even got in the act prior to the presentation of flags representing the countries from which NCC students hail.
The Freshman Leadership Award was the only award to be kept a surprise from the audience. The recipient, Michele Wagner (in red below), a
non-traditional and exceptionally busy student, committed to her work and her 4.0 GPA, thanked Jeffrey P. Fehnel, Jr. of the College Life Committee, with a big smile after he presented her award.
The following students, advisors, and organizations received special recognition at the celebration:
Jennifer Simrell Award: Mary Beth Serfass
Outstanding Service to the Environment Award: Ali McCarthy (pictured with poster)
Charles H. Groman Award: Tamara Kilousky and Karl Howard
Athletic Academic Excellence Award: Mark Pugilese and Eden Fimiano
