NCC Design Students Keep Streak Alive
March 27, 2008

For the sixth consecutive year a student from Northampton Community College has won an “ADDY” for design in a contest described as “the world’s largest and arguably toughest advertising competition.”

Russell Maura, a communications design major from Hellertown, was awarded a silver ADDY for a poster he designed to promote NCC’s annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Maura is shown with his silver ADDY at the awards dinner.
He is being congratulated by Thomas Shillea,
director of art programs at NCC.

Maura’s poster featured an image of Dr. King superimposed on a map of the United States, under letters proclaiming the theme for the event: “Vote the Dream.” White stars on a blue background and two bold red stripes created an eye-catching effect consistent with the message.

Maura created the design for a class with Traci Anfuso-Young, a professional designer who teaches at NCC. She was impressed with its graphic elements and overall composition.

So were the judges! Maura received the ADDY at an awards dinner hosted by the Greater Lehigh Valley Ad Club at Brookside Country Club in Macungie. He was accompanied by his wife Jennifer and by Thomas Shillea, director of art programs at NCC.

ADDYs are awarded by chapters of the American Advertising Federation all over the country. There were 176 entries in the local competition.
