Northampton Community College will host an information session from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, for recent high school graduates and adults who are considering careers in the biotechnology industry. Participants will get a sneak peek at the new cleanroom that is being constructed at NCC. They will also have a chance to learn about new programs NCC is adding this fall in aseptic processing and automation control in biomanufacturing. Experts will describe career options in the biopharmaceutical and biomanufacturing industries. The information session will be held in Room 159 of Hartzell Hall of Technology on Northampton Community College’s campus on Green Pond Road in Bethlehem Township. For more information, e-mail cadams@northampton.edu.
In August middle school and high school teachers will get their chance to learn more about these fields during in-service workshops that Northampton Community College is holding at East Stroudsburg University. Teachers will be eligible for a $100 stipend for participating in these grant-funded programs.
Biotechnology is applied biology – using biological principles to help solve real-life problems or make useful products. Northampton Community College is offering the in-service workshops to help increase awareness at the middle and high school level of the diverse field of biotechnology, and the many career opportunities available to students.
NCC’s associate degree in biotechnology easily transfers to baccalaureate programs in biotechnology, biology, chemistry or related fields at four-year colleges.
Workshops for teachers include:
Level I – Introduction to Biotechnology. This workshop is open to middle and high school science teachers and guidance counselors who have never attended a Biotechnology in-service program at NCC. Aug. 4-5, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Level II – Advanced Biotechnology Techniques. Participants must have attended a prior Biotechnology in-service program at NCC (since 2004.) Aug. 6-7, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Level III – The Business of Biotechnology. Open to participants who have attended a prior Biotechnology in-service at NCC (since 2004.) Aug. 12-13, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Teachers may register for the workshops by calling 570-688-2494, or by emailing mcantave@northampton.edu. Registration deadline is July 28.
