What a serendipitous surprise! Kids in Northampton Community College's Horizons for Youth class "Cars, Cars, Cars" were treated to an up-close encounter with a NASCAR pace car on August 2, the day before it opened the Pennsylvania 400.
Chase Mattioli, a NASCAR driver and grandson of Pocono Raceway owners Drs. Joe and Rose Mattioli, brought the Chevrolet Camaro pace car to the class location at Pocono Mountain West High School at the invitation of instructor Kathy Doyle.
"Chase talked to the kids about seat belt safety, and told them what it was like being a race car driver," said Dee Raneri, assistant director of community programs for NCC Monroe. Mattioli let the students explore the pace car and even try on his official helmet.
Although the class was for kindergarten through second-graders, older students from other classes couldn't resist coming out for a peek. Who could?!
