"We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the love and support of our family and friends, and the encouragement and guidance of our advisors and professors," student Nordia Campbell said as she welcomed those very people to Northampton Community College's Leadership Graduation ceremony on April 10. "We went into the program as college students, we came out as leaders."
Nineteen students were chosen at the beginning of the spring semester for the leadership development program through a competitive selection process. They met every week for presentations and exercises led by faculty, staff and community leaders. The students also attended a retreat and worked on a group project together.
The guest speaker was someone who understood very well what it was like to participate in NCC's leadership program. Joshua Kaminski, a 2008 leadership class graduate, recently completed a master's of biomedical science degree at The Commonwealth Medical College and is currently working as a simulation technician at Lehigh Valley Health Network.
"The leadership skills I learned here help me in everyday life," Kaminski said. He went on to give an example of the annual blood drive held at his graduate school. "They only had 15 donors. I thought 'we can do better.'" The tools he learned in the leadership program helped make the drive a success. The blood drive is now held twice a year and averages 60 donors.
"People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they're doing," Kaminski ended with. "Pursue your dreams, set goals, and have fun."
Have you seen the "Keep Calm and NCC On" t-shirts on students around campus? Or in the bookstore? The 2013 leadership students are the brains behind the design, which is based on the slogan "Keep Calm and Carry On," used on morale-boosting posters displayed by the British Government during the Second World War
The students were responsible for creating, marketing and selling the t-shirt. Before receiving their diplomas, they spoke about how they worked together to achieve this goal as well as lessons learned in their retreat.
Dr. Mark Erickson congratulated the students before presenting them with their diplomas.
