Supplemental Instruction
What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a series of weekly review sessions for students in selected courses. SI is provided for all students who want to improve their understanding of course material, learn how to study better, and improve their grades.
Attendance at SI students is voluntary and FREE. Students have the opportunity to get together with other students from their class to compare notes, discuss important concepts, and develop strategies for studying the subject.
At each study session, students are guided through the material by an SI leader, an exemplary student who did well in the course.
What’s in it for you, the student?
If you participate in SI sessions regularly, chances are you’ll earn a better grade. In past semesters at NCC, students who attended SI sessions regularly earned higher grades and passed their course at a higher rate than students in the same sections who did not attend SI. You will also develop a better understanding of the course content as well as more effective ways of studying. This will help you be a more successful learner in your other classes also.
What can you expect from your SI Leader?
The SI leader
- Attends class along with students
- Facilitates two or three study session per week
- Works closely with the instructor and knows the instructor’s expectations
- Is trained in the most effective learning and study strategies
- Integrates “how to learn” with “what to learn”
- Empowers students to become independent learners
