What is ESL at NCC?
Northampton Community College offers English as a Second Language courses to help students and professionals sharpen their communication skills. Courses are designed for students with intermediate to advanced knowledge of English who want to increase their effectiveness at work, at school, or in social settings.
What courses do you offer each summer?
Generally, courses in Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Culture are offered each summer. See the current offerings and course descriptions for more information.
Do I receive credit for taking an ESL course?
Yes, ESL is a credit program.
When do classes meet and how long do the summer sessions last?
The Summer ESL institute consists of two sessions for 6 weeks each with classes meeting for a total of 16-24 hours per week. Classes are held four days a week from Monday to Thursday. Meeting times are subject to change depending on class size. See the current offerings and course descriptions for more information.
How much is tuition?
The tuition will depend on the number of credits taken by each student. All students must take a minimum of 6 credits. Level II and Level III are all 3 credit courses. Level IV classes are all 4 credits. The exact tuition will be determined after testing and placement. Students may have a combination of levels.
6 Credits (2 classes) = $2568.00
7 Credits (2 classes) = $2996.00
8 Credits (2 classes) = $3424.00
9 Credits (3 classes) = $3852.00
Can I get a discount on tuition?
No, we do not offer discounted tuition rates at this time. US students and residents may be able to use their financial aid to cover the costs of these courses. Check with the Financial Aid office to see if this option is available.
Do you offer financial aid?
Yes for US citizens and Permanent Residents.
If I drop a course, can I get a refund?
Students may receive a full refund of tuition up to the first day of classes. After that, the regular refund policy applies. Please see the complete refund schedule for more information.
Do I have to attend every class?
As a general attendance policy, students are allowed up to a certain number of absences and still be able to complete the course. If your schedule does not allow you to attend the program from beginning to end, you may want to consider registering for the following semester instead.
Do I have to be an accepted NCC student to participate in the Summer ESL Institute?
Yes. We encourage all students ages 15+ to enroll in ESL courses.
Can I get a VISA to take summer ESL courses?
Yes, if registering for at least six credits in the summer program, we will be able to sponsor an F-1 Visa for international students. Make sure that all the required forms are received by our office by the deadline of May 1. How do I know what level to register for?
Summer: Placement testing is administered on the first day of the summer intensive program during Orientation.
The Summer ESL Institute at NCC does not offer beginning level courses. You must have studied English for at least 1 year prior to enrolling.
Do you provide housing? Is the cost of housing included in tuition?
Yes we provide housing.
Housing costs are not included in tuition. You must complete a Housing Application and submit a Housing deposit to be considered for on-campus housing. We can provide more information.
