Dear Members of the Class of 2020,
As I shared with you last month, because of the COVID crisis and our efforts to protect the health and well-being of our students, faculty and staff, plans for the May commencement ceremony have been postponed and we’ve been evaluating alternatives for a rescheduled event.
A committee comprised of faculty, staff and students was established to review options and make a recommendation how we best proceed. Following their careful deliberation and thoughtful assessment, we’ve made the decision to adopt a virtual ceremony approach. This is something many colleges and universities are moving toward as a result of current circumstances and to preserve everyone’s safety.
Plans for a virtual ceremony (or possibly academic division/school specific ceremonies), are still in development and we will announce those later this month, (including the timing) after we finalize a number of details. And to be clear, this impacts the ceremony only. Students who meet all requirements will be considered graduates as May 21, the original date for our ceremony, and should still feel free to celebrate this outstanding accomplishment in advance of our virtual ceremony!
While I share the disappointment we all have of not being able to host a live graduation ceremony in the Spartan Center, protecting the safety of our community and family members is paramount. And I’m confident our virtual event will recognize our students in grand Spartan style!
