Meet Maggie, Jack and Ethel

Maggie is the leader of my three dog pack!

Maggie, Jack and Ethel

 Your name:   Lori Williams

 Job title/department:   Assistant Director/Financial Aid

What is your dog’s name?   Maggie, Jack and Ethel

How old is your dog?   10, 9, 1

Pure breed or mixed mutt?   Maggie: mixed Cattle Dog and Border Collie; Jack: mixed lab; Ethel: mix Rat Terrie

What is your dog’s gender?   Female, male, female

Describe your dog in three words:   Maggie: Bossy, loyal, intelligent; Jack: loving, loyal, sensitive; Ethel: smart, sassy, scrappy

What is the thing your dog cannot live without?   Maggie needs a job. She is always on duty.
Car rides. Jack loves nothing more than riding in the car with his head out the window. It is his happy place.
Treats. We've only had Ethel a short time but she is very food driven and likes to learn tricks for treats.

Can your dog do tricks? If so, what?   Maggie: Sit, stay, down, shake, crawl, speak, whisper.
Jack: not big on tricks but he can sit, stay, down, shake paws.
Ethel can sit, down, shake, cover her eyes, jump and is learning new tricks every day!

What is the best trick your dog has taught you?   Maggie prefers to drink out the bathtub faucet and stands outside the bathroom and barks until someone turns the faucet on for her.
Jack has taught us about unconditional love and the absolute joy of loving a dog.
Ethel taught us that you get the dog you need not the dog you want.

Do you have a nickname for your dog?   Maggie: Miggles, Margaret, Mags; Jack: Doodle; Ethel: Special Ethel

Does your dog enjoy bath time?  Maggie loves a bath or a brushing. Jack does not like it at all. Ethel doesn’t care for it.

You know your dog is in a good mood when he/she does this:    Maggie: plays with a toy. It is unusual for her to actually be relaxed and play.
Jack: waggles his entire body like a slinky.
Ethel: pounces at you to play. She is extremely playful and I'm not sure we could fulfill her play needs without the help of our lab mix. He takes a lot of her crazy energy. She is the fastest dog I've ever seen or owned.

Your dog’s favorite spot to hangout is:   Maggie: in the doorway of anywhere you want to go.
            Jack: anywhere I am.
Ethel: with her best dog friend, Jack. She leads him around by his bandana

Favorite toy:   Maggie: Lamb Chop; Jack: Squeaky balls; Ethel: Squeaky caterpillar, but she loves all toys.

One habit you would love to change:   Maggie: BARKING; Jack: He buries his bones and then acts territorial about it.
Ethel: She is a notorious digger and tries to dig an escape route under our fence.

Does your dog prefer to play with people, or other dogs?    Maggie: She's a people lover and tolerates other dogs.
Jack: Jack loves all people and dogs and sometimes cats, too.
Ethel: She loves people but not so much other dogs. We are working on her dog tolerance.

Does your dog like children?   Maggie adores children and has guarded over my two granddaughters since they were born.
            Jack loves everyone.
            Ethel is excellent with children.

If you could ask your dog one question and they’d be able to answer it, what would it be?    Maggie: How do you know what I'm thinking or planning to do seemingly before I even know?
Jack: I would like to know if he is in pain, especially as he grows older.
Ethel: I'd love to know what her life was like before we adopted her. She has certain triggers that bring out her fear based behaviors. She came with some baggage but we are going to love her through it.

Can your dog read your emotions?    Maggie: See previous question...she is the most intuitive dog I've ever had.
            Jack: Absolutely
Ethel: She is very in tune with us.

Funniest moment you’ve had with your dog:   We adopted Maggie (her name was Mellow when we got her and she was definitely not mellow) when she was a year old and the woman who re-homed her told us she would only drink from the bathtub but we didn't believe her until we got her home. She had us trained in no time.
Jack has made us laugh so much over the last 9 years. He is really the most easy-going dog I've ever had. When he was younger he had a tendency to jump up on things like our tractor and dining room table chair. He doesn't do much jumping these days but he still brings a smile to our face every single day with his tail wagging, happy personality.
After we had Ethel for a week, we took a trip to the beach with all three of our dogs. It was a very bonding experience and we went to a dog-friendly beach so we got to see her run and play until she was literally exhausted.

What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your dog? Maggie is challenging because she is extremely reactive and always on the job. She loves to be brushed and when I see her let her guard down and enjoy being pampered she seems like a different dog. She is that way around babies, puppies and young children...joyful.
Jack gives comfort to so many people. He is just the kindest and most loving animal.
I had been looking for a small dog that I can use for a therapy dog and Ethel is the right size and temperament so     I'm hoping to begin that training soon.

Additional Comments:  Maggie is currently the leader of my 3 dog pack, along with Jack and Ethel.
