NCC Winter Commencement Speaker Announced

President of Moravian College to Speak

Bryon L. Grigsby, president of Moravian College and Moravian Theological Seminary, will be Northampton Community College's (NCC) Winter Commencement speaker on Saturday, January 28, at 11:00 a.m., at the Arthur L. Scott Spartan Center, NCC Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.  The ceremony is being held to recognize NCC August and December graduates.   

From 2000 - 2008, Grigsby served as the vice president for strategic implementation, dean of graduate and writing programs and provost and chief operating officer at Centenary College, in Hackettstown , New Jersey.  He was senior vice president and vice president for academic affairs at Shenandoah University, in Winchester, Virginia, from 2008 - 2013.  He became president of Moravian College and Moravian Theological Seminary in 2013.   

Grigsby earned a bachelor's degree at Moravian College, a master's of arts degree from Wake Forest University and a Ph.D. from Loyola University, Chicago, specializing in medieval literature, early modern literature and the history of medicine.  In 2014 he competed Harvard University's New President's Program.  

He is the author of a monograph, Pestilence in Medieval and Renaissance English Literature and Misconceptions of the Middle Ages, a collection of essays compiled with his co-editor, Stephen Harris.  He served as one of the founding members and inaugural president of Medica: the Society for the Study of Health and Healing in the Middle Ages and was the general editor of the online journal Medica.  He has published articles in numerous other journals and served as an expert on the cultural interpretation of disease in relation to SARS for the Washington Post.   

A strong advocate for liberal arts education, Grigsby is a member of the Chronicle of Higher Education Book Club, and the Council for Independent Colleges.  He is a board member of the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation and a member of the Bethlehem Rotary Club.
