Title IX Student Information

We want students to have a great educational, social and personal experience while attending our college.

Northampton Community College strives to recognize human dignity and therefore does not tolerate sexual harassment or any other type of harassment within or connected to this institution.

We understand that every interaction or encounter with another person may not always be a positive one. Sometimes interactions involving others can become threatening. Any student can be the victim of sexual harassment. We would like to give you the tools and support to protect yourself from unwanted or threatening behaviors.

Behaviors such as sexual harassment, unwanted sexual advances or stalking should be taken seriously.

Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sexual discrimination in any form; to include any form of sexual harassment and gender discrimination.

Federal law states: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

What is sexual harassment?

Sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual- or gender-based verbal, written, online, and/or physical conduct.

"Sexual harassment in education includes any unwanted and unwelcome sexual behavior that significantly interferes with a student's access to educational opportunities. The Supreme Court has confirmed that schools have an obligation under Title IX to prevent and address harassment against students, regardless of whether the harassment is perpetrated by peers, teachers, or other school officials" (Title IX, 1972).

Retaliation

The College strictly prohibits retaliation against any person for filing a complaint about harassment, for making a request that harassing conduct stop, or for assisting a person with a harassment complaint.

Why should you tell someone?

You may not be the only person who is being harassed by this individual. Report sexual harassment so it will stop.
