Child Development Associate

NCC accepts six credits for the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential as equivalent to EARL106 Early Childhood Development and Learning and EARL 217 Child, Family and Community. The following procedure** is to be followed:

  1. Complete the Admission Process to NCC.
  2. Send your name, address, telephone number and a copy of the CDA credential you received from the Council for Professional Recognition to: Anu Sachdev, Early Childhood Education, Northampton Community College, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem, PA 18020.

*Important: If the CDA preparation program provided college credit, attach the college transcript to the credential, and NCC will transfer the credits earned in preparation for the CDA. If your organization is a partner organization check the partnership webpage for more information.

**There is no cost attached to this process.

Tech Prep

The Family and Consumer Sciences Tech Prep Program allows high school graduates to enter NCC with 6 credits in Early Childhood Education. These are advanced placement credits which means that the student does not have to take EARL106 Early Childhood Development and Learning or EARL217 Child, Family and Community.

Students qualify for these credits upon successful completion of a Family and Consumer Science/Tech Prep portfolio. Portfolios are submitted by early June and reviewed by a portfolio committee comprised of NCC/ECE faculty and Family and Consumer Science teachers. Portfolio rubrics are available from the Tech Prep office upon request by emailing jmercovich@northampton.edu

Challenge Portfolio Assessment

Students who believe, based on their prior experiences, that they have the knowledge, skills and dispositions to meet the outcomes of a particular course may complete a final assessment portfolio. The final assessment portfolio will be the same one that is required by students taking the course. A professor who teaches that course will do the grading of the portfolio. The same criteria applied to credit students' work will be used for determining a grade.
