Committing to Complete

"Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes ... but no plans."

Thanks to Northampton Community College's Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society chapter, on April 11, many NCC students made a commitment to complete their education, be it a degree, certificate, or specialized diploma.

"Completion Day" featured a large poster stating, "Don't be passive, take an active stance in your educational journey today!" that students passing through Laub Lounge could sign before filling out a pledge card. There was even a red carpet photo-op station, complete with mortarboard prop, ready for signers to have their picture taken as "Future NCC Grads."

For those looking for some help to honor their commitment, information tables featured staff and students from the library, learning center, advising and disability services, student leadership, financial aid, the alumni association, honors club, and Good Growers club. Participants could even apply to graduate at one of the tables. A PTK bake sale offered popcorn, hot pretzels and baked goods, with proceeds going toward helping students succeed.

Faculty and staff passing through were asked to contribute their strategies for staying in school:

Dr. Mark Erickson: "Stay connected. Get a mentor."

Sharon Lee-Bond: "Ask for help!"

Elizabeth Bugaighis: "Believe in yourself -- you can do it!"

Tyrone Wright: "Good time management skills."

Mardi McGuire-Closson: "Achieve your goals - stay with it!"
