$200k grant will help fund College's new Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Northampton Community College (NCC) has been awarded $200,000 as part of a grant from the BB&T Economic Growth Fund at the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation. The grant will be used towards the NCC Fowler Family Southside Center's new Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The Center will serve as a hub of innovation for local business, industry, and entrepreneurs, as well as expand NCC's Fab Lab while better preparing students who are looking to go into business.
At a check presentation at the Southside Center on June 29, Scott V. Fainor, BB&T community banking group executive, said, "We've had a great partnership for many years between BB&T and NCC. We couldn't be more proud to be a part of the Center for Business and Industry."
The grant to NCC is part of $1.45 million in grants to several Lehigh Valley organizations from the BB&T Economic Growth Fund at the Lehigh Valley Community Organization. The donations will support manufacturing, create job pipelines, reduce blight and spur economic development through various additional initiatives.
Fainor added, ""BB&T has a long history of supporting our local business and academic communities. We are proud to provide community leadership at this level, and we believe BB&T's investment will play a significant role in the future health and prosperity of the Lehigh Valley."
"It has been a true pleasure working with Scott Fainor and the leadership of the BB&T Economic Growth Fund in making these important investments in the growth of the Lehigh Valley," said Bernie Story, president and CEO of the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation. "We are delighted to have partnered with BB&T in assessing the many opportunities for support, and we know this effort will have an impact throughout the entire community. The Lehigh Valley Community Foundation is in a strong position to support efforts like this, and BB&T is to be commended for their commitment to the quality of life in the Lehigh Valley."
Paul Pierpoint, dean of the Southside Center, praised BB&T and the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation for being "pillars impacting the community in amazing ways. NCC is always trying to create new entrepreneurs not just new businesses. It's the people that matter. They don't always have to start businesses to be change agents in the community."
Raja Bhattacharya, director of NCC's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, accepted the check on behalf of the College.
In conjunction with the BB&T/National Penn merger last year, $5 million was donated to two local foundations with the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation receiving $2.5 million to establish the BB&T Economic Growth Fund. The fund awards grants to initiatives that will improve the standard of living and economic health of the Lehigh Valley through business attraction and incubation, industrial growth and creation of sustainable and thriving wage jobs.
