International Education Week 2019
Each day during the International Education Week on Bethlehem Campus, held from November 18 – 22, brought something exciting to Northampton Community College (NCC). Students, faculty and staff enjoyed the kickoff event on Monday where international students shared their home country on a map for all to see in the Student Life Zone. Global dance music got the party going while attendees received henna tattoos of their names written in Arabic, Korean and other languages or designs.
Mid-week, people gathered in Laub Lounge to try their hand at Japanese Calligraphy. Kondo and Miko, both well-versed in the art of calligraphy, explained what each of the hanging calligraphy panels meant in Japanese. There was a silk robe that someone was wearing with a poem on it written in beautiful calligraphy. The really awesome part was that it was written while the robe was being worn!
Towards the end of the week, displays were set up around Laub Lounge with countries from Turkey to South Africa and everywhere in between. Each display had important facts about the students’ countries like climate, tourist activities, languages spoken, and more. Students brought in foods and beverages to sample like Arabic coffee, which has a tangy ginger taste, a sweet Tunsian treat called Jeljlaneya, and delicious Marquesotes from El Salvador. Jewelry, pottery and other country artifacts were displayed as well, like a fun game of congklak from Indonesia.
The week finished up with an international movie night where guests watched the French film, Amelie, in the Kiva Room.
Everyone who attended the week’s festivities came away with a new piece of a knowledge, a new tattoo or a souvenir from the students! Check out the gallery from the week here!
