“My major was something dear to my heart,” says Qadirah Collins, a Monroe Campus graduate from Long Pond. “I always wanted to help people, and becoming a social worker was the best choice.”
Since 2014, she has gone “back and forth” with college. After the deaths of both of her parents in 2016, she decided to resume her education. She says it was the best decision she ever made.
“The advisors were great,” Collins says. Her all-time favorite, she says, is Ms. LaToya Dubery, who went the extra mile for her. She also credits Dean Belinda Austin with helping her to be successful. She describes Dubery and Austin as great people who invest in their students.
Her advice for social work majors is to do their research, make sure their hearts are in the right place and to be patient.
Collins plans to transfer to East Stroudsburg University. Her goal is to become a social worker in an urban setting.
