NCC Intern Sells Washington Organization on New Software

Sean Clarke, center, with Kurt Jackson (l) and Marty MacDonald (r)How often does a student help sell a major piece of software to a prominent organization while he or she is still in college?  Sean Clarke, a computer science major on the Monroe Campus, did just that this fall. 

As a participant in Northampton Community College's (NCC) internship program, Clarke worked for Software Consulting Services (SCS), based in Nazareth. The company, in business for forty years, is one of the longest surviving newspaper and other media computer system vendors in the western hemisphere operating continually under the same owner and manager. It serves clients in 19 countries, with customers publishing material in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese. 

One of these clients is the White House Historical Association (WWHA), founded in 1961 by then First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. The mission of this non-profit organization is to enhance understanding and appreciation of the executive mansion by collecting and exhibiting artifacts of American history and culture.  

Clarke worked on SCS's sale of a digital asset management system, which enables staff to manage and share all digital archives that pertain to the White House. He helped compose a proposal to the WWHA and did presentations of the software's ability to upload pictures, videos, contracts, and other paperwork to a server.  He also categorized these items for greatest searchability.  In the process Clarke uploaded and tagged more than 2,000 images provided by the WHHA. This work required learning three of SCS's FotoWare DAM ( Digital Asset Management) software applications. Sean also had to learn the taxonomy used by the WHHA to properly tag the images.

Clarke traveled to Washington, D.C. for the last presentation, at WWHA's headquarters.  A short time later, the organization decided to purchase the software.  

"Responding to a request for proposal can be very time intensive. Sean's contribution both saved me time as well as increased the overall quality of the product that we put out the door," says Kurt Jackson, vice president and general manager of SCS.  

Clarke's internship taught him a great deal. "I learned that each client's expectations and needs are different," he says. "You have to go into a project knowing what your potential customer wants and needs so that you can provide them with what they require.  It was a great experience." 

Clarke plans to transfer to a four-year college and major in computer science. Long-range, he has a master's degree in mind.
