Pet-of-the-Day - Meet Maya
- March 31, 2020
She makes sure each child is up for school!
Your name: Amy VanVarick
Job title/department: Business and Technology - Coordinator of Paralegal Studies
What kind of pet do you have (dog, cat, bird, etc.)? Cat
What is your pet’s name? Maya
How did you come up with this name? We adopted her from a shelter after the hype about the Mayan Calendar predictions of the world ending.
How old is your pet? 8
What is your pet’s gender? Female
Describe your pet in three words: My helpful co-parent!
What is the thing your pet cannot live without? My children...
Can your pet do tricks? If so, what? She makes sure each child is up for school. She follows them to the bathroom, waits, escorts them back to their room and then makes sure they get ready for school.
What is the best trick your pet has taught you? How to open, shut, open, shut doors that she wants to see open, shut, open and shut.
Do you have a nickname for your pet? Maya Roo (She lifts one of her paws like a kangaroo)
You know your pet is in a good mood when he/she does this: She becomes kitten-like chasing things.
Your pet’s favorite spot to hangout is: My daughter's lap, son's laptop (when he is using it), any bed, window sill, cat condo, basement...whatever is available.
Favorite toy: My daughter.
One habit you would love to change: Need to install a snooze button or an alarm off switch on her. She may be able to figure out when it is time for the kids to go to school, but she can't tell the weekday from the weekend.
Does your pet prefer to play with people, or other animals? My daughter, my son and anyone holding her cat brush.
Does your pet like children? Yes
If you could ask your pet one question and they’d be able to answer it, what would it be? Where do you go when we can't find you?
Can your pet read your emotions? Yes, she's a great therapy cat. She senses bad days people may be having and won't leave their side until she knows they are ok.
Funniest moment you’ve had with your pet: Her reaction to our Roomba. See photo below.
What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your pet? She keeps my kids happy (she tolerates me because I'm the one who "attempts" to get her in the carrier for her vet appointments) and helped me raise my two kids in her own way. I have step-kids who she also adopted...especially the ones who hold her cat brush! She's a love!
