Pet-of-the-Dat - Meet Squeaky
- April 2, 2020
Squeaky is very close with our youngest daughter Tara!
Your name: Sharon Vietmeier
Job title/department: Program Manager, Education
What kind of pet do you have (dog, cat, bird, etc.)? A Chocolate Lab (dog)
What is your pet’s name? Squeaky
How did you come up with this name? We actually did not come up with the name! When we adopted him we were told as a puppy he loved to chew squeaky toys; and still does!
How old is your pet? 11
What is your pet’s gender? Male
Describe your pet in three words: Sweet, lovable, a little goofy like his nickname "Scooby-dooby-do"!
What is the thing your pet cannot live without? Squeaky toys, sticks, rocks, etc....anything he can carry in his mouth!
Can your pet do tricks? If so, what? At first, he would grab treats out of our hands until we trained him to sit and "take it nice". We can sometimes get him to balance the treat on his nose before eating it.
What is the best trick your pet has taught you? He is a stress relief! He is so sweet, and loves to be petted and takes all of your cares away! He has taught us to stop and take a break from the busy life to enjoy each day! He has slowed down in the last year or two due to losing his best friend "Bear" our adorable girl black lab who was Squeaky's companion. Since we had to put her down due to kidney cancer, he is a little more lonely, but a lot more lovable since he is not sharing our time with her!
Do you have a nickname for your pet? Scooby-dooby-do
You know your pet is in a good mood when he/she does this: Barks and constantly wants treats :) When we call "time to eat", he is READY!
Your pet’s favorite spot to hangout is: In our "dog room" mudroom
Favorite toy: Squeaky toys, sticks, stones
One habit you would love to change: Barking at 5am to go out for a walk; knowing that he will be fed right after the walk
Does your pet prefer to play with people, or other animals? Both
Does your pet like children? Yes
If you could ask your pet one question and they’d be able to answer it, what would it be? Are you happy that you came to live with us? Prior to living with us, he was in a home with cats, and the couple gave him (and Bear) up since he did not get along with them! I'm allergic to cats, so we know he is happy that there are no cats around!
Can your pet read your emotions? Mostly. Very close with our youngest daughter Tara. She spends lots of time with him in his "dog room" petting him and talking to him. They have a great relationship!
Funniest moment you’ve had with your pet: Since Squeaky likes to carry things in his mouth, one day he came up from running carrying a dead deer's leg! I was grossed out, but he was happily wagging his tail and seemed to be saying "Look what I brought you, Mom! Aren't you proud of me!" YUCK!
What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your pet? The unconditional love they provide us. Pets are family! I can't ever see a time that we wouldn't own a dog. Both my husband and I have had dogs from early on in our lives, and I believe Squeaky and Bear (adopted at the same time) are our 4th and 5th dogs since being married. My husband is a golf course superintendent, and can take dogs with him on the course, so dogs go with him wherever he goes! The last few dogs we had to put down, my husband was like "I need to get another dog NOW"
Now that our kids are here (7 year old daughter, 15 year old son) and Squeaky is getting up in years, I think they would like to get a smaller dog. We have had labs and (my favorite) golden retrievers, but now we are looking into a smaller dog (Shih Tzu, Maltese or Yorkshire Terrier). We are presently looking :)
