Meet Smidgen

Smidgen Plays Tag!

Your name:   Christina Salvadore

Job title/department:   Assistant Dean - Online Learning

What kind of pet do you have (dog, cat, bird, etc.)?   cat

What is your pet’s name?   Smidgen

How did you come up with this name?  Smidgen's mom is a brown/black tabby. Her dad is orange. Smidgen mostly looks like her mom but she has a few "smidgens" of orange here and there (on her one shoulder, part of her nose, one foot). It also has double meaning because I love Gertrude Hawk’s smidgen candies.

How old is your pet?   9 - she'll be 10 in June 2020

What is your pet’s gender?   Female

Describe your pet in three words:   Sassy, curious, playful

What is the thing your pet cannot live without?   Her cat tower - she loves looking out the window from it and keeping an eye on the neighborhood. She also loves to sleep on it.

Can your pet do tricks? If so, what?   Depending on her mood, I can get her to play our own version of tag on our first floor. Our first floor is set up so that you can walk in a circle through 3 rooms. I'll quickly run to the next room then peak around the corner for her. Then she'll come running after me. We'll keep repeating this until eventually she'll run around the whole floor with no break until she catches me and gives me a little slap on my leg.

What is the best trick your pet has taught you?   Not to take things so seriously - she has quite the personality!

Do you have a nickname for your pet? Smidge, Kitty, Smidgy

You know your pet is in a good mood when he/she does this:    She will purr very loudly, jump up on the couch or bed to cuddle, and if she gets really happy, she sometimes drools (I think she's part dog).

Your pet’s favorite spot to hangout is:   Wherever I am. She's my little shadow. Depending on what room I'm in, she's got many favorite spots. The cat tower is definitely one of her favorites. She also likes to sit on a stool in the kitchen and in a small ground level window in our basement.

Favorite toy:   Circular scratchpad with a ball on a track that circles around it. And any cardboard box she can fit herself in.

One habit you would love to change:   She was the only girl in her litter and so I think she learned to be a good fighter to hold her own with her brothers. She can get rough when playing.

Does your pet prefer to play with people, or other animals?    DEFINITELY people. And by people, I mean only my husband and I. She gets spooked by cats and dogs and she runs and hides when we have visitors.

Does your pet like children?   Yes

If you could ask your pet one question and they’d be able to answer it, what would it be?    Why are you so afraid of other cats?

Can your pet read your emotions?    I think so. She is extra cuddly when I'm not feeling well.

Funniest moment you’ve had with your pet:   When she was a kitten, I bought her a small harness to try and take her outside. When we went outside and the wind hit her, she was such a big baby. She started crawling around as low to the ground as possible. It ended up being a very short adventure outside.

What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your pet?   When I come home, she always runs out to greet me and show off by scratching her scratch pad excitedly while looking at me. Then she'll run over and start rubbing against my legs. Things like that make me feel so loved and appreciated by her. If I'm having a bad day, a greeting like that never ceases to put a smile on my face.
