Act 48
Pennsylvania Act 48 requires all PA certified educators to participate in ongoing professional education and must complete: **
-
six credits of collegiate study; or
-
six credits of continuing professional education courses; or
-
180 hours of continuing professional education programs, activities or learning experiences; or
-
any combination of credits or activity hours equivalent to 180 hours (6/6/180), every five years for all types and areas of certification to maintain active status.
With a wide selection of opportunities for professional development and lifelong learning, Northampton Community College offers Pennsylvania educators a convenient way to satisfy Act 48 requirements.
Northampton partners with area school districts to offer high-quality, competency-based professional development workshops, learning experiences, and activities for teachers and administrators. Why Northampton?
** One credit equals 30 activity hours. All credits and activity hours must be related to an educator's certificate type or area of assignment. The administrator may approve exceptions if a change of assignment area is anticipated.
Please note that for Level II certification or for Letters of Master's Equivalency, the Bureau of Teacher Preparation and Certification will only accept credits from a four-year degree granting college/university or continuing professional education credits provided by Pennsylvania Intermediate Units. Therefore, continuing professional education classes provided by Northampton Community College may only be used to meet the Act 48 requirements to maintain active certification.
